Songthaews (literally means “two rows”) are covered pick-up trucks with two rows of seating in the back for passengers. They function like local buses in Hua Hin. Although there are many other transport options in Hua Hin, such as taxis and tuk-tuks, they tend to charge very inflated prices. The songthaew is the cheapest form of public transport, and you don’t have to worry about haggling when taking these local “buses”.
There are no bus-stops for songthaews. To take the songthaew, you simply flag down a passing one and jump in the back. Before getting on a songthaew, make sure that it’s going your way. If you’re not sure, check with the driver. Although most of the drivers don’t speak English, they know the English names of popular destinations. Tell the driver where you want to go; the driver will nod yes if he/she is going your way.
Each songthaew has buzzers installed on its ceiling. When you want to get off, just press a buzzer and the driver will stop for you. You can then alight from the vehicle and pay your fare to the driver.
In Hua Hin, the songthaews currently drive along 4 set routes. These routes are served by songthaews in different colors.
